The Reese Project -- Review of "Blue Etude"

as printed in the International Association of Record Collectors (May 2008)

written by Herb Young

"The blues is basic to jazz and this CD is laden with the blues as the tune titles suggest.  The blues is presented in many forms but all with integrity.  Various combinations of musicians are used ranging from two to seven musicians but the latter number only on one selection, "Autumn Samba."  There is never a dull moment throughout the CD.  Everyone has favorites and this reviewer is no exception.  "Blue Tuesday" is great and the only vocal in the album.  "Blue Etude" is just cello and guitar but the harmonies -- wow!  I cannot say that there are any tracks I would want to skip.

One cannot single out any particular musician but I suspect that all of these people work together with some degree of regularity. they sure mesh well.  The cello is not unknown in jazz (Oscar Pettiford and Harry Babison comes to mind) but it is not used frequently. One would wonder why as it adapts so well and when in the proper hands, as here, it adds a special ingredient. The flute, on the other hand, has been used extensively in this music and with good effect and Mr. Reese can hold his own with the best (Ali Ryerson, Frank Wess, etc.).  The other instrumentalists all chip in some fine contributions adn are offered adequate solo space.

The sound quality if fine throughout.  I may wish for a bit more information regarding the song titles as I am sure there is a story behind several of them.  Tom Reese composed all the music save one title, "Blue Dali" that was written by one of the guitarists, Aaron Walker. The recording is well recommended."
